Apparently if you're a member of Metafilter there is very little that surprises you anymore. There are several reasons for this but the most obvious one is that you are a jaded and tired individual, fed up with explaining to the rest of humanity the way the world works.
Expressing a lack of surprise also gives a poster an air of lofty superiority, as well as giving (false) authority.
Here's an example of the kind of a dialogue that goes on:
Poster: I've just read on Eschaton that George W Bush has been grabbing small kittens and drilling holes into their skulls
Reply: I'm not surprised as trepanning has been used for many years to increase blood flow to the brain. Bush is in fact helping to improve the brain activity of these kittens. I wouldn't be surprised if in five years time we see a super-kitten that is not only smarter but fluffier
In fact it's become such an epidemic on MeFi I thought I would have a look around and see what else didn't surprise people.
